Saint Surly (Cameron Rutter) &
Monster Monster (Daniel Wright) have been collaborating live and in the studio for over 2 years. Combining their mutual interest in instrumental Hip Hop and beat driven soundscapes these two producers have developed a strong and dynamic working unit. Both have a unique and differing approach to beat making and production but channel this to explore the creative possibilities of sampling and recording.
Their live shows have consisted of a number of formats over the last couple of years, ranging from song-for-song beat battles; live improvs with Monster on drums to cohesive live beat jams with Monster rocking Serato and Surly rocking the MPC. Starting out with self promoting and organising local gigs with other beat-making Brissy heads, Surly & Monster have gone on to grace the stage of many venues around town and land supports with artists such as Kid Koala (Ninja Tune/Canada).
In 2010 Monster Monster & Saint Surly completed a collaborative/split CD release titled “Out of the Woodwork” featuring cover design by Brisbane illustrator/designer James Alley (Metagraphics). This album features a mix of solo tracks from each artist and collaborative instrumentals. The album has been released through local Co-Op beatmaker label Videorama.
